Mass Shootings in Schools: Lessons from Tragedy and Opportunities for Prevention and Response
Mass shootings in schools, particularly in light of recent tragedies at Oxford High School (MI, 2021) and Robb Elementary School (TX, 2022), have raised important considerations about how best to prevent such tragedies. While there is considerable variability with respect to the perpetrators and their backgrounds, each shares similarities regarding their pre-attack behaviors and identifying these provides important opportunities for identification of the threat and ultimate prevention of the shooting. In this session, we will explore these behaviors along the Path to Intended Violence, identifying opportunities for threat identification, assessment, and management. A case study of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting (FL, 2018) will be provided, highlighting how missing these warning signs can lead to the unthinkable. Finally, this session will discuss ways in which schools can leverage existing resources, including students, to help prevent similar tragedies in their own community.
